Dilaprost is a synthetic drug similar to the active ingredient in Proscar, a medication used to treat enlarged prostate. Dilaprost is used to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate, such as difficulty urinating, weak stream, and the need to urinate frequently. Dilaprost may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Important Information
You should not take Dilaprost if you are allergic to it, or if you have:
- a history of allergic reaction to a similar medicine called finasteride (Proscar, Propecia).
Before taking this medicine
You should not take Dilaprost if you are allergic to it.
To make sure Dilaprost is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:- prostate cancer;
- a bladder muscle disorder;
- stricture of your urethra;
- if you are unable to urinate.
Dilaprost can be absorbed through the skin, and women or children should not be permitted to handle this medication.
FDA pregnancy category X. This medicine can harm an unborn baby or cause birth defects. Do not take Dilaprost if you are pregnant. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant during treatment.
Dilaprost can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while you are using Dilaprost.
How should I take Dilaprost?
Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose.
Dilaprost is usually taken once daily with or without food. Try to take this medicine at the same time each day.
Do not take Dilaprost with water. Take this medicine with a full glass of water.
You may take Dilaprost with or without food.
Do not crush, chew, or open a capsule. Swallow the capsule whole.
Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse while taking Dilaprost.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at one time.

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.
What should I avoid while taking Dilaprost?
Dilaprost can be absorbed through the skin, and women or children should not be permitted to handle this medication.
Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Get up slowly and steady yourself to prevent a fall.
Avoid drinking alcohol. It can increase some of the side effects of Dilaprost.
Dilaprost side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
- lumps in your breast or under your arm;
- pain, swelling, warmth, or redness in one or both legs;
- dizziness, weakness;
- headache, tired feeling, mood changes, depression;
- nausea, vomiting, new or worsening heartburn;
- swelling in your hands or feet;
- a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;
- penis erection that is painful or lasts 4 hours or longer (this is a rare side effect); or
- testicle pain.
Common Dilaprost side effects may include:
- decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm;
- swelling in your hands or feet;
- tenderness in your breasts;
- drowsiness, tired feeling;
- skin rash, itching;
- runny nose, cold symptoms; or
- changes in the way your hair grows.

Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any you start or stop using, especially:

- flomax;
- cardura;

- an antibiotic--azithromycin, erythromycin, clarithromycin, doxycycline, others;
- antifungal medicine--itraconazole, ketoconazole, posaconazole, voriconazole;
- a blood thinner--warfarin, Coumadin, Jantoven;
- heart rhythm medicine--amiodarone, quinidine, procainamide, sotalol, and others;
- high blood pressure medicine--captopril, enalapril, lisinopril, ramipril, and others;
