Prostacom is a medication used to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). It can also be used to treat male pattern hair loss.
Prostacom is the brand name for the medication finasteride. Finasteride is a type II 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. This means that it inhibits the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
DHT is a hormone that plays a role in the development of BPH. It is also thought to be responsible for male pattern hair loss. By inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to DHT, Prostacom can help to treat the symptoms of BPH and hair loss.
Prostacom is available in two strengths - Prostacom 5 mg and Prostacom 1 mg. Prostacom 5 mg is the standard dose for the treatment of BPH. Prostacom 1 mg is the standard dose for the treatment of hair loss. Prostacom 5 mg is also available as a generic medication.
Prostacom is taken orally, with or without food. It is typically taken once daily. For the treatment of hair loss, Prostacom should be taken for at least 3 months before results are seen. For the treatment of BPH, Prostacom may be taken for 6 months or longer.
Common side effects of Prostacom include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculatory dysfunction. Prostacom can also cause dizziness and drowsiness. These side effects are usually mild and go away with continued use of the medication.
Prostacom is a prescription medication. It is not available over-the-counter. Prostacom is available in generic form.
