Mostrafin (finasteride) is a synthetic 4-azasteroid compound that is a selective inhibitor of Type II 5a-reductase, an intracellular enzyme that converts the androgen testosterone into 5a-dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the androgen primarily responsible for the initial development and subsequent enlargement of the prostate gland. Inhibition of 5a-reductase leads to decreased levels of DHT in serum and tissues. Mostrafin is a white crystalline powder with a melting point near 250°C. It is insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol, and freely soluble in chloroform. The chemical name for finasteride is N-tert-Butyl-3-oxo-4-aza-5a-androst-1-ene-17-carboxamide. Its structural formula is: C23H36N2O2 Molecular weight: 372.55 Mostrafin is available as a tablet for oral administration. Proscar (finasteride) tablets contain 5 mg of finasteride and the following inactive ingredients: hydrous lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, sodium starch glycolate, and magnesium stearate. Inactive Ingredients: hydrous lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, sodium starch glycolate, and magnesium stearate. Dosage Mostrafin is available as a tablet for oral administration. Proscar (finasteride) tablets contain 5 mg of finasteride and the following inactive ingredients: hydrous lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, sodium starch glycolate, and magnesium stearate. The usual dosage of Proscar is one tablet (5 mg) taken once a day. If you miss a dose of Proscar, take the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses of Proscar at one time. Storage Store Proscar at room temperature, between 59°F and 86°F (15°C and 30°C). Store in a tightly closed container. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Proscar out of the reach of children and away from pets. Do not take Proscar if: you are allergic to any ingredient in Proscar you have been told by your doctor that you have a urinary tract blockage. Some medical conditions may interact with Proscar . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances if you have a history of abnormal liver function tests, prostate cancer, or urinary tract problems if you have a history of kidney stones Some medicines may interact with Proscar . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following: Hormonal contraceptives (eg, birth control pills), or hormone replacement therapy (eg, testosterone) because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Proscar Ketoconazole or itraconazole because they may increase the risk of Proscar 's side effects This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Proscar may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine. Important safety information: Proscar may cause drowsiness or dizziness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Proscar with caution. Do not drive or perform other possible unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it. Some men taking Proscar reported decreased libido that continued after they stopped taking this medicine. Other men reported no change in libido. Proscar may decrease the amount of semen released during sex. The decrease in semen may decrease the risk of transmitting a sexually transmitted disease (STD) to your partner. Lab tests, including prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels and prostate exams, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments. Use Proscar with caution in the elderly; they may be more sensitive to its effects. Proscar should not be used in children; safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed. Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Proscar has been shown to cause harm to the fetus. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Proscar while you are pregnant. Proscar is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Proscar , check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby. All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most common side effects persist or become bothersome: Dizziness; drowsiness; weakness. Seek medical attention right away if any of these severe side effects occur: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); breast enlargement, lumps, pain, or tenderness; nipple discharge; testicular pain.
