Hyplafin (finasteride) is a synthetic 4-azasteroid compound that is a selective inhibitor of Type II 5a-reductase, an intracellular enzyme that converts the androgen testosterone to 5a-dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Hyplafin is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate. It is also used to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men. Hyplafin is available in generic form. Common side effects of Hyplafin include:
decreased interest in sex,
ejaculation disorder (e.g., decreased volume of ejaculate),
impotence,
trouble having or keeping an erection,
breast tenderness or enlargement,
rash,
runny nose, and
weakness.
Hyplafin can also increase your risk of developing prostate cancer. Tell your doctor if you have a family member with prostate cancer before starting this medication.
Hyplafin is available in tablet form and should be taken orally, with or without food, once a day. If you miss a dose of Hyplafin, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
